Tierralegre´s Green Technology & Sustainability Fair

Greetings from La Manzanilla!

Tierralegre, A.C. (www.tierralegre.org) is hosting the first Green Technology and Sustainability Fair all day this Friday, December 5 in La Manzanilla.  The program of activities can be viewed below, and are also attached in this message.

This inaugural event to showcase ecological education, environmental stewardship and community sustainability will combine with the annual fundraiser to help raise the necessary funds to maintain the YES (Youth Ecology and Sustainability) Initiative and to build a multi-use outdoor classroom at the Youth Ecology Center in La Manzanilla this coming year.

Thus a space will exist at the Center where local and visiting teachers and students can learn, exchange research and ideas, provide service and innovation through collaboration in an inspiring, comfortable and green environment.  The completion of this structure will ensure that the Center continues to provide an oasis for local community sustainability well into the future…

If you are unable to attend, but would like to make a donation to this cause, please do so through Tierralegre´s “Friends of the Fund” page on the International Community Foundation´s website at the following link: http://donate.icfdn.org/#npo/tierralegre-a-c (all donations are tax deductible).

¡See you at the event-thank you!

When the lagoon is open

When we get the kind of rain we've had in the last few months the lagoon becomes a river and opens into the ocean. A few crocodiles were reportedly seen offshore. No driving the beach route to Boca de Iguanas when this happens.

Trolls and stalkers and Red-Tide

So many unhappy Gringos in Mexico and I think an abnormal amount on the Costalegre. Where you find this out is on the local message boards. Especially TomZap but occasionally on the La Manzanilla board. I like to disagree with people when their info is faulty and I like to complain about the ridiculous amount of advertising that goes on on TomZap. Personal attacks I don't like but way too many people seem to feel better when they can put someone else down.   I blame most of the problem on terrible moderation on TomZap.   No limits on advertising and almost no limits on personal attacks.

So this time around I was asking if there was any new information on the La Huerta police that were being investigated for the killing of 3 of my neighbors.  I guess this is serious and real because the Mayor of La Manzanilla quit and left town.   The three were stopped by the police leaving town after the Rodeo in February.    Their bodies were found a few days later outside Manzanillo.

So along comes the stalker, troll, trouble maker telling me to stop asking questions about this very serious situation.  I tell him to mind his own business if he has nothing to add.   That's all it took for him to begin his rant.  It turns out it's a guy using a woman's name and fake email address so he can't be contacted.

Oh Oh come on over here and we can have a coffee, of course, you will buy. And by the way I am far more concerned than you are. Why don't we meet tomorrow at, 9a.m.. at Hectors, I will be waiting for you. And by the way I know what you look like. Maybe you are too coda..too cheap to buy me a coffee, but I would love to talk to you.
You can email mail me with that little white envelope by my name. I truly would love to meet you in person, even though I know you are a cranky pants.. BUT please I will be at Hectors at 9a.m. waiting.. So enough of wasting other peoples time.email me.. See you tomorrow. and. bring the kids and wife!!!

The moderator locked that thread which was definitely the best idea.   All I am left with is a where in the hell do these people come from ..... and we have Red Tide.   Further Internet searching has no new info since mid February.

La Manzanilla Rodeo and Gringo Day

I haven't been to the Rodeo since 2006 but despite my neglect it was still one of the most interesting and fun events I've attended in the area.   Gringo Day and the Rodeo are Friday but here is a 3 day rundown from the La Manzanilla message board.

Festivities will begin the evening of February 5th. Everyone will gather on the main streets & the around the jardin at approx. 8:00 pm. A large lantern on a pole called a Farola will be paraded up & down the streets, followed by a Banda. People will begin following the Farola, moving to the beat of the music, dancing up one street, down another. Free punch (ponche) will be handed out. The street dancing goes on until 9:00/10:00. This evening announces that The Ejido will be hosting a luncheon the next day at the Casino at 2:00 pm.

On the evening of February 6th, the same happens in the evening, this time announcing the luncheon next day at the Casino will be hosted by The Gringos (Expats, Extranjeros, etc.).

February 7th, Gringo Day at the Casino 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Gringo volunteers will serve our home-made Birria to our Mexican friends & neighbors & guests. During the luncheon there will be dancing & a presentation or 2. After the luncheon everyone follows the Banda up to the Rodeo grounds (either by foot or by car), about 7 - 9 blocks away. Your contribution/ticket into the Casino also admits you into the Rodeo grounds (Feb 7th only). Where you will watch bull riding, dancing horses, lassoing, topped off with dancing to the Banda until sunset. The Rodeo grounds people will have refreshments & snacks for sale.

It is a fun filled day .... come join the fun!!

La Manzanilla in the 1940's

Well that's what the photograph says about itself.   The palapas look a lot like fotos of Barra de Navidad and Melaque from the 1950's so no reason to doubt it.   The hill directly behind downtown is probably where this was taken.   I saw this on the La Manzanilla message board and they said it came from Facebook but I had no luck trying to find a little more info or it's origin.
